How to Blog with Purpose and Build a Digital Legacy That Speaks for You
People often ask me,
Mary, how did you get on the first page of Google search when someone types ‘Mary Job’?
My answer is always the same: I started by keeping a blog.
Back when I launched maryjob.wordpress.com, I didn’t fully understand SEO, marketing, or personal branding. What I understood was this — if I didn’t tell my story, someone else might, or worse, no one ever would.

Why Blogging with Purpose Matters
Think about it for a minute:
- Where have you been all this time?
- What have you been doing?
- How are you showing the world what you’re great at?
If you are not documenting your growth, your wins, your lessons, and your ideas, how will people know what you stand for and where?
Blogging intentionally is not just about writing for clicks. It’s about creating a trail — a digital footprint — that shows your evolution, values, and expertise.
Today, we have more than written blogs. You can vlog, podcast, or even micro-blog on platforms like LinkedIn or Threads. The key is documenting your journey. Because without documentation, you can’t grow, connect, or be remembered.
As my Twitter friend Uchechukwu once said:
“Attend school, get what it offers, but develop yourself more into what you desire to be.”
That’s exactly what blogging helped me do — develop myself into who I wanted to become.
The Power of Personal Blogging
When I began blogging, it wasn’t for fame or followers. It was a way to make sense of my experiences — to process what I was learning as I grew into my work, my community, and my calling.
Personal blogging lets you:
- Share your journey through your lens.
- Build credibility and trust with your audience.
- Create digital proof of your growth and expertise.
Over time, your stories become your portfolio. They show people not just what you do, but why you do it.
That’s how people find you, remember you, and trust you. That’s how I got on the first page of Google — not through ads or hacks, but through authenticity and consistency.
Blogging as a Tool for Connection and Credibility
In the digital world, customers and collaborators want to know you before they trust you.
They don’t just want to see your product or service — they want to understand the person behind it. Your blog is your chance to invite them into your story.
Every post you write becomes part of your online résumé, showing the world that you know your onions (as we say in Nigeria).
You don’t claim your space in the marketplace by shouting louder than others. You do it by showing up, sharing your journey, and letting people see your growth.
That’s what purposeful blogging does.
